Almen Gage Shot Peening Intensity Measurement

Almen Gage is a precision measurement instrument used to determine shot peening intensity by measuring the arc height of an exposed Almen Strip. It is one of the fundamental process control tools used in controlled shot peening applications.

During the shot peening process, an Almen Strip is exposed to the same peening conditions as the component. After exposure, the strip is placed on the Almen Gage and its resulting curvature, or arc height, is measured. These measurements are used to generate a saturation curve and determine the Almen intensity of the process.

Accurate Almen Gage measurement is essential for maintaining repeatable shot peening parameters and verifying that the required process intensity has been achieved. Together with Almen Strips, proper fixture positioning and controlled process parameters, the Almen Gage provides an important method for monitoring and documenting shot peening operations.

How Does an Almen Gage Work?

An Almen Gage measures the arc height of an Almen Strip after it has been exposed to the shot peening process. Before measurement, the strip is removed from the Almen holder and positioned correctly on the four reference points of the gage.

The measuring indicator determines the amount of curvature produced by the peening impacts. This arc height value is recorded and used together with the exposure time to create an Almen saturation curve. The saturation curve is then used to determine the Almen intensity of the shot peening process.

For reliable measurements, the contact surfaces of the Almen Gage and the Almen Strip should be clean, the instrument should be properly zeroed, and the strip should be positioned consistently during each measurement.

Because small differences in arc height can affect process evaluation, correct handling and measurement technique are important for repeatable shot peening intensity control.

Almen Gage and Almen Strip

Almen Gage and Almen Strip are used together to measure and verify shot peening intensity. The Almen Strip is a standardized test strip that is mounted on an Almen holder and exposed to the same peening conditions used for process verification.

After exposure, the Almen Strip develops a curvature due to the compressive stresses generated by the impact of the peening media. The strip is removed from the holder and placed on the Almen Gage, where the resulting arc height is measured.

Depending on the required intensity range and application, different Almen Strip types may be used, commonly identified as N, A and C strips. Correct strip selection is important because each strip type has a different thickness and is intended for a different intensity range.

Multiple measurements at different exposure times are used to construct the saturation curve. The resulting curve allows the operator or process engineer to determine the Almen intensity and verify the repeatability of the shot peening process.

Shot peening is an advanced mechanical surface treatment process applied to increase the fatigue strength of metal parts, controlled according to international standards. During the process, steel, stainless steel, ceramic, or glass balls, selected according to the material type and application requirements, are impacted onto the part surface at high speed. The resulting controlled plastic deformation creates permanent compressive residual stresses on the material surface. This process is carried out without the need for any heat treatment and improves the mechanical properties of the material without changing its chemical structure.

The main purpose of the shot peening process is to delay crack formation, prevent crack propagation, and significantly increase fatigue life, especially in critical parts operating under high dynamic loads. Thanks to the compressive stress layer created on the surface, the fatigue strength, stress corrosion resistance, and service life of the parts are significantly increased. Therefore, the process; Shot peening is considered an indispensable quality practice in the production of components requiring high reliability in the aerospace, defense, automotive, energy, railway, and medical sectors.
